Gabrielle Johnson, Class of 2016

Congratulations to GCA graduate, Gabrielle Johnson (Class of 2016), who was just awarded the 1911 Society Award at ETSU!  She was notified by the University President via video conference on Friday, April 24.

A plaque with her picture will hang at the Tennessee room in the ETSU Culp Center.  She is also the first to graduate with an honors double major with a shared thesis.  We're so incredibly proud of your continued commitment to excellence, Gabrielle!

During her time as a student at Grace Christian Academy, Gabrielle was highly involved in student life, leadership, and campus activities.  She was a part of the GCA Ensemble where she served as the Vice President one year and served on the Student Council for two years.  In athletics, Gabrielle competed on the Track and Field team and was a cheerleader for the Rams. Gabrielle was inducted into the National Honor Society and was awarded for having the highest G.P.A. in A.P. Literature as a senior.

After graduation from GCA, Gabrielle enrolled at East Tennessee State University and quickly found her niche.  During her four years of study, she received numerous awards, including most recent 1911 Society (for superior scholarship and service, presented by ETSU President, Brian Noland.  She completed a degree in English Honors-in-Discipline and Philosophy Honors-in-Discipline and is graduating Summa Cum Laude in May 2020.  Gabrielle was on the Dean’s list every semester, and received the Jill MacClean Memorial Scholarship (Department of Literature and Language superior academic scholarship), Niall Shanks Honors Scholarship (Department of Philosophy Thesis research scholarship), and was a recipient of the Victory Cooper Undergraduate Fund (for research funding).  Gabrielle was also the recipient of the ETSU Department of Philosophy research funding and received The Mockingbird First Prize Winner for Fiction Honors Thesis notation of distinction.

Gabrielle was busy in student activities while at ETSU and served as the Phi Sigma Pi Recording Secretary, President, and Fundraising Chair.  She was also involved in the Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society.  Gabrielle was a presenter at the Southern Appalachian Student Conference on Literature, and was accepted to present a second time but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the second conference was canceled.

During her time at ETSU, Gabrielle participated in the University of Colorado Boulder Summer Seminar in Philosophy and was accepted into the prestigious Summer Program for Women in Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego.

Gabrielle has significant goals for her future and is already working professionally in her field.  Gabrielle shared, "I am currently working as a freelance writer and tutor to build my writing portfolio. My goal is to become a professional content and ghostwriter. I also want to publish more fiction as a side hobby. I may go back to school to get an MFA, but I’m undecided about that."

Gabrielle, we couldn't be more proud of the way that you've pursued and developed your God-given talents.  We know that He has great things ahead and will honor your diligence!
