Brett Emery, Class of 2016, Prepares for Fellowship

GCA Class of 2016, Brett Emery, just graduated from the University of Tennessee summa cum laude with a major in Honors Neuroscience and a minor in Chemistry.

Brett will begin a one year fellowship in Dresden, Germany, this September.

After graduating from Grace Christian Academy with highest honors in 2016, Brett Emery went on to continue her education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and graduated in May 2020.  Brett graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Honors Neuroscience and a minor in Chemistry.

Brett is currently planning to pursue an M.D./Ph.D., and will move to Dresden, Germany, in September 2020 to begin a fellowship there.  The fellowship may potentially lead to a Ph.D. if she enjoys the laboratory/research and is asked to stay on.  Her eventual goal is to return to the U.S. for medical school, with her overall plan to work in neurology with a research focus.

Her fellowship will complement the experience she has had during her time at UTK.   She explains, "During the fellowship I will be learning all the necessary technology and techniques for the actual project. The goal is to look at multimodal, multi scale experiments from a molecular, cellular and network perspective to understand functional plasticity. The aim is to better understand the neural regeneration circuitry to help provide neurodegenerative disease models and treatments for these diseases.

I have worked in a neurodegenerative disease clinic for over three years, so I wanted to focus on this type of research. I also was in a BCMB and neuroscience laboratory at UTK for three years under Dr. Keerthi Krishnan (https://krishnanlab.utk.edu/), where I have worked on an independent project with neurological disorders. I am a co-author on one paper, and in the middle of publication for a co-first author paper!"

We love to see our graduates using their God-given gifts and pursuing their passions.  We know that God has remarkable plans ahead for this dedicated and diligent student!

We're so proud of you, Brett, and we are praying for you as you begin this exciting new experience!
