Theatre
Programs Offered
Elementary/Early Middle School
Grace Christian Academy reached new academic heights through its first Broadway Junior Production, Annie Junior, which featured students in grades 3-5. The GCA Elementary School list of performances include other junior musicals such as The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and School House Rock.
As the program has grown, the junior musicals encompassed students in grades 4-8. These shows have included Frozen, Jr., The Music Man, High School Musical 2, and more. These productions have allowed our students to participate in a first-class musical experience with a strong dramatic emphasis.
Elementary School and Early Middle students occasionally have the opportunity to be a part of High School performances, like The Music Man, The Sound of Music, Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang and other shows that call for a wide range of ages. Audition opportunities will be promoted to the students well in advance to allow time for preparation.
Musical Theatre
Middle School
Students in grades 7 and 8 may audition for the High School spring musical. These students will take musical theatre as a first period elective for two quarters and be integrated into the High School cast.
High School
The GCA Musical Theatre Department offers a rich experience for students in the performing arts. With one musical each spring, students in the Musical Theatre Department spend their year in this elective class preparing for the annual show beginning with a camp in June. The High School has performed a variety of Broadway musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Cinderella, and many more. Students must audition to be in this class.
Drama/Dramatic Arts
Early Middle/Middle School
Students in grades 6-8 may select a one-quarter drama class that encompasses things like stage makeup, sword fighting, pantomime, commercials, puppetry, improvisation, and a host of other theatre activities. It is a fun, stress-free elective. In addition to the drama elective offered, these grades will perform a play every other year alternating with the junior musical. Middle school students have performed plays such as Tom Sawyer, Charlotte's Web, Generation Pan, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!
High School
Any student in grades 9-12 may take the High School Drama elective, and these students will perform the fall play first semester. The high school students have performed plays such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Peter Pan, Little Women, Our Town, and more. After the show during the second semester, students continue building their performance skills as they prepare for other special events.
Storytelling Festival
One of the favorite annual events is the Fall Storytelling Competition. Any student in grades 3-6 may audition to be in the festival, and three students are selected from each grade. These students tell stories using their dramatic talents and are judged by a team of local celebrity judges. The students are trained under the direction of Mrs. Tonya Wilson.
