High School

The High School curriculum is focused on core courses in Bible, English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, and History, with concentration on the writing process, reading comprehension, and vocabulary development. A high value is placed on collaboration, with all departments working together to encourage and support each student’s personal and academic maturation.

Students move through courses in Math, Science, and Foreign Language in a sequence that is appropriate for their skills level, which ensures that grade level does not limit course selection. GCA offers honors courses in English and formal Advanced Placement courses in English, United States History, European History, German, Spanish, Calculus, and Studio Art.

In order to graduate, students must earn a minimum of 28 credits in grades 9-12. Seven credits are available each year. Credits are awarded on a semester basis, not on the basis of the yearly average in each class.

Colleges are looking for a variety of academic courses that demonstrate a margin of difficulty. GCA offers 10 AP courses and 13 Honors courses along with numerous DE opportunities for juniors and seniors. GCA also boasts a state-leading 90% AP exam pass rate.

The Dual Enrollment Program is a cooperative effort between Bryan College and GCA to offer college-level courses to GCA students. This program allows students the opportunity to earn college credit while at GCA. Bryan College is a small, regionally accredited Christian liberal arts college. These courses are only available to 11th and 12th grade students who have a 3.00 cum GPA in order to enroll.

As a graduation requirement, all seniors will successfully complete a capstone course that serves as GCA’s culminating educational experience. The project encompasses written components and an oral defense that demonstrates the student’s understanding of a controversial topic when applied against a biblical worldview. The Capstone Director and Capstone Committee will guide students through the process of planning, refining, and
defending their chosen topic. Students will learn to interact with this material both in a historical and modern-day context. The final culmination of the course is a Senior thesis that students present and defend before a board of advising teachers. 

“Learning outside the traditional classroom” has become the mantra of GCA’s Winterim program. For the entire week before spring break, students abandon traditional classes in order to travel (domestic or international), take on-campus courses, or participate in an internship (upperclassmen only). Below outlines some of the opportunities available. A Course Catalog will be available in early January, and online registration begins later in the month. As a reminder, successful completion of Winterim is a graduation requirement.

Juniors and Seniors: Upperclassmen not participating in a trip during Winterim are encouraged to secure an internship, if possible. Guidelines are posted on Google Classroom, as is information for potential supervisors. Although students are required to secure their own placement, please see Mr. Lynn if assistance is needed.

Sophomores: This week you will be a part of an exciting College and Career experience for any sophomore not traveling. Throughout the week, we will cover topics on self-discovery, college and career discovery, as well as incorporate online tools for each topic. The Grace Guidance department utilizes the online tool, Scoir, and each student will have the opportunity to walk through their own account to learn more about the process of college and career. Additional topics include: financial aid/scholarship, interviewing skills, and team-building exercises. 

Freshmen: Students not traveling will choose from on-campus classes facilitated by GCA staff. Options include half-day and full-day courses. Students either choose one full-day course or two half-day courses; students stay in the course(s) for the entire week.

In order to receive credit for Winterim, students must attend the entire week and complete a Reflection Journal. This information will be further explained to students before Winterim week. Feel free to reach out if you have questions.

The goal of the Learning Center is to meet students at the point of their need and help move them to the peak of their potential. We want each student to truly know that they are uniquely and individually made with a God-given plan and purpose for their lives.  At an additional fee above tuition, students may receive tutoring services during their school day to either provide a level of academic support or to promote academic acceleration. 

Students with a current diagnosed disability that impacts educational learning may also be eligible to receive classroom accommodations through a formal educational plan (Learning plan or 504 plan).

Tutoring support is available to any student at an additional cost. Fees are billed through the GCA FACTS system each month.

As part of the Mission Engagement Development Process, High School students at Grace Christian Academy will be participating in meaningful mission experiences and service to others. Students will be encouraged and expected to reach out to the needs of their fellow students, churches, local nonprofit agencies, and people across the world. The goal of the Mission Engagement requirement is to engage students both academically
and spiritually as they seek to glorify God through service to Him. Through these experiences, students will develop skills in planning, research, communications, service, and leadership. It is the hope that their work, combined with their personal experiences in ministry, will serve to enlighten their minds and inflame their hearts, that they might ultimately be transformed into both lifelong learners and servants of Christ.

The Guidance Department at Grace Christian Academy serves to encourage and support students as they discover their full potential in Christ.

With the use of the Scoir portal, a tool for students and parents, and college and career counseling services, our Guidance Department offers a full range of resources for students as they navigate high school and prepare for the future.
